There are a couple very frustrating things that can happen while baking:
#1: Running out of an ingredient.
#2: Realizing your brown sugar is rock hard.
This homemade brown sugar can solve both of those issues. If you run out of brown sugar or you find that your brown sugar is rock hard, you can easily make this homemade version. Granulated sugar and molasses are two ingredients that I typically have on hand, so this homemade brown sugar comes together in a breeze.
What is brown sugar?
Brown sugar is a sugar substance made with a combination of sugar and molasses. In baking, it not only acts as a sweetener, but it adds moisture and an acidic ingredient to your baked good. Recipes that use brown sugar will often also call for baking soda, as baking soda requires an acidic ingredient in order to create a reaction and leaven baked goods.
Ingredients
Granulated Sugar: This is the base of brown sugar.
Molasses: This is the ingredient that turns sugar into brown sugar. It adds a rich flavor and is the acidic ingredient in brown sugar that interacts with baking soda to cause a leavening reaction.
