What is Vegan Baking?

What is Vegan Baking?

A vegan diet is one that excludes all animal products and by-products. In baking, this mainly means using no eggs, dairy, or animal by-products. You may be interested in vegan baking for a reason other than following a vegan diet: you want to limit your cholesterol intake, you’re baking for a vegan loved one, or you want to reduce your carbon footprint. For whatever reason, I’m happy you’re here and hope I can help you on your vegan journey!

How to bake without eggs or dairy

You may be wondering how you can bake without eggs, butter, and milk (among other things). Well, it’s easier than you probably think. Milk can be replaced with non-dairy milk (there’s even a simple way to make vegan buttermilk!), butter can be replaced with plant-based butter, and eggs can typically be omitted with other changes to the recipe, such as by adjusting the leavening agents and adding more liquid.

Many baking staples like flour, sugar, oil, and vanilla are all still staples in vegan baking. If you’re new to vegan baking, I recommend always researching and following vegan recipes when making baked goods. However, as you continue to improve your baking skills you may feel comfortable enough to take non-vegan recipes and play around with substitutions to turn them vegan – check out my guide to vegan swaps if you want to learn more about this.

What desserts can be made vegan?

Almost all desserts can be made vegan! Cakes, cookies, brownies, macarons – you name it, a quick google search will show that there are thousands of recipes out there for vegan versions. Head to my recipe section to find some of my favorite dessert recipes.
